UMaine Students Head to Atlantic City for Construction Competition

ORONO, Maine -- In Atlantic City, the bet will be on the skills of six University of Maine Construction Management Technology students who are headed for competition in New Jersey March 5. Instead of hitting the gaming tables however, this team will pit its construction planning expertise against students from other colleges and universities in the Eastern Region Construction Management Competition of the Associated Schools of Construction (ASC).

Supported by $4,000 in contributions from the Associated General Contractors (AGC) of Maine Foundation and Kiewit Construction Co., the students will develop detailed professional documents suitable for bidding on a major construction project. They will also give a formal presentation to a panel of judges which will include representatives of nationally prominent construction firms.

“They're really excited about the competition,” says Chuck Gould, professor in the School of Engineering Technology. “They'll take a week of their vacation time to finish preparing. When we get to Atlantic City, they'll set up a functioning construction management office with computers, plotters and presentation materials.”

All the participants are seniors. They include Cassandra Magoon of Harmony, Aaron Eaton of Ellsworth, Marc Belanger of Lewiston, Ronald Milley of Yarmouth, Cooper Holmes of Old Town, and Mike MacCannell of Springvale.

The competition is divided into two parts: construction management and project controls. Student teams will demonstrate their ability to design an effective and creative construction management proposal and use state-of-the-art procedures to control costs and manage schedules.

The target project for the competition is construction of a new post office in Grand Island, Nebraska.

The Construction Management Technology Program, part of the School of Engineering Technology, began in 1987 and currently has 60 students enrolled. Graduates enjoy a nearly 100 percent job placement rate with firms in Maine and the other New England states.

Students take a broad range of science and math courses as well as classes in computer applications, construction technology and business practices.

Other ASC schools in the Eastern Region include Drexel, Clarkson, Roger Williams and Temple.
