All You Ever Wanted to Know About the Maine Forests Now on Compact Disc from UMaine

If going to the source is the best way to dig up information, Maine citizens who are interested in the forestry referendum on the November ballot will find a gold mine in a new compact disc and Web site developed by the University of Maine Department of Forest Management.

Titled “The State of the Maine Forest,” the CD includes state forestry laws, reports of research and monitoring activities and analyses of town by town forest harvesting and vegetation maps. It also offers the full text of the fall, 2000 referendum question along with commentaries by UMaine faculty and other analysts. Internet links are included for a broad spectrum of forest science and policy organizations including academic, government, industry and non-profit groups.

There is a lot of scientific and general information available about the Maine forest, and we wanted to make it accessible to citizens. This turned out to be a great project for the forestry students. We all learned a lot about the forest by doing it,” says Steve Sader, professor in the Dept. of Forest Management from Orono.

The Web site was put together by a team of undergraduate students working with Sader and Sean Murphy of Orono, a graduate research assistant. The team was led by Renee St. Amand of Old Lyme, Connecticut, who was assisted by Ben Herzog of Lagrange and Jake Metzler of Hancock. Funding was provided by the Maine Agricultural and Forest Experiment Station and a National Aeronautics and Space Administration Maine Forest grant.

Copies of the CD are available from the College of Natural Sciences, Forestry and Agriculture, 207-581-3229. It can be read with software used to browse Web sites. The Web site can be see at http://www.ume.maine.edu/~MIAL/maine_cd/firstpage.htm.
