Registration Holds

October 14th, 2009

Registration holds are being placed on students’ accounts as of Wednesday, October 14th.  All holds must be resolved before a student can register for spring 2010 courses.  To view holds, login to MaineStreet and go to the Student Center.  On the right side of your screen the Holds box will indicate whether a hold has been placed on your account.  You could receive a registration hold for immunization requests, a final high school transcript request, or a past due bill.  The “details” link in the Holds box will provide contact information should you have questions regarding what is required for the hold to be removed.

Degree Progress Report (Degree Audit) now available in MaineStreet

The degree progress report (a.k.a. degree audit) is intended for advising purposes only and is NOT the final or official determination for completing degree or program requirements.  Only a College and/or Department can make that final official determination.  Please use the degree progress report as a basis of discussion during advising.

Payment Due on Student Accounts

If you have a balance due to the University, you must make payment arrangements now. Please review your account on MaineStreet Self-Service. If you have a balance due that is not covered by anticipated aid, please remit payment by one of the following options:

  • Make a payment with an Electronic Check, by logging on to MaineStreet Self Service and navigating to the Campus Finances section.
  • Mail a payment to The University of Maine Bursar’s Office, 5703 Alumni Hall, Orono, Maine 04469-5703.
  • Pay in person in the Bursar’s Office located at 100 Alumni Hall. The Bursar’s Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 4:00PM.
  • Pay by credit card.  Tuition and fees paid by MasterCard, Discover or American Express credit card are processed by Sallie Mae’s Tuition Pay Express Plan by calling 1-800-635-0120 or visiting http://www.TuitionPayEnroll.com. Please note that a teleprocessing fee is assessed if paying by credit card.

To enter any credit not shown on your student bill, you must enter your Anticipated Resources by logging into MaineStreet and navigating to Student Self-Service > Student Center > Self Service > Campus Finances > Anticipated Resources.

Should you have any questions concerning your account balance, please contact the Bursar’s Office at 207-581-1521.

Stafford Loan Master Promissory Note (MPN) Requirement

If you are borrowing through a lender for the first time, you must sign an MPN (either electronically or on paper) with your lender in order for funds to be released to the University. If you are using the same lender as before (for returning students), your MPN is valid for 2009-2010. However, all Citibank borrowers are required to sign a new MPN this year. More information on the MPN can be found by visiting www.umaine.edu/stuaid and clicking on MPN Completion (Stafford Loan).

Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling is Required

Several students have not completed the required Stafford Loan Entrance Counseling. If you have not yet received your Stafford Loans, please check your To Do List on MaineStreet to determine if this is listed as a requested item. To complete this requirement, go to www.umaine.edu/stuaid and click on Loan Counseling (Stafford).

Students Must Choose a Stafford Loan Lender

Several students have not selected a Stafford Loan lender and therefore these loans cannot be processed. If you did not choose a lender while accepting your award, please go to the Student Center and click on the Accept/Decline Awards link. Select the 2010 aid year to go to the Award Summary Screen. At the bottom of the screen, click on the Stafford Loan Application link. Click on the magnifying glass to view a list of Stafford Loan lenders and select a lender from the list.

Veteran’s Benefits

As of July 1, 2009 most veterans education benefits are being excluded from estimated financial assistance (Higher Education Act Technical Corrections Bill – H.R. 1777). Benefits that still must be included as financial assistance are the National Guard Tuition Assistance and the Veteran Dependent Waiver, as they are programs funded by the state. Students should not be concerned that the excluded benefits no longer appear on their financial aid award. If you have questions regarding eligibility for veterans education benefits, please contact the UMaine Office of Veterans Affairs at 207-581-1316 or visit their website at www.umaine.edu/studentaffairs/vets.

Financial Aid Adjustments for Less Than Full-Time Students

The Office of Student Financial Aid is currently adjusting financial aid awards for students who were awarded as full-time, but are enrolled less than full-time. If your award is adjusted, you will be sent an email notification which will direct you to MaineStreet to view your revised award.
