Take some initiative and apply for national scholarships and fellowships. They focus your thinking about what you might like to do, and thus help to shape your choice of graduate schools. If you land one, they can materially improve your chances of getting your first choice in graduate schools. They also will expand the range of research problems that you will be able to consider compared to students with assistantships funded by grants to their advisors. The list below is by no means exhaustive. Go to the Graduate School's collection of links to many more.
