National Fellowships and Scholarships

Take some initiative and apply for national scholarships and fellowships. They focus your thinking about what you might like to do, and thus help to shape your choice of graduate schools. If you land one, they can materially improve your chances of getting your first choice in graduate schools. They also will expand the range of research problems that you will be able to consider compared to students with assistantships funded by grants to their advisors. The list below is by no means exhaustive.  Go to the Graduate School's collection of links to many more.

Deadline Program
Early October National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency Graduate Sciences Program Scholarships
Late October Environmental Protection Agency Fellowships
Early November National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowships
Early January National Defense Science and Engineering Graduate Fellowships
Late January Department of Homeland Security Graduate Fellowships
Early February National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency Dr. Nancy Foster Scholarships
