This list is organized largely by latitude, and moves in the direction of flow of the prevailing coastal currents off the east coast of the North American continent. We start with institutions in Iceland to emphasize that fresh water from the Arctic is intimately involved in setting physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the Maine coastal current. We end a little past Cape Hatteras, where southward progress of those same coastal currents is overpowered by the Gulf Stream.
