Founded in 1983, the Island Institute is a nonprofit membership-based organization dedicated to partnering with Maine’s year-round islands and working-waterfront communities to ensure that they remain vibrant places to live and work.  We provide support through programs such as the Island Fellows, Maine Island Scholarships, and a wide range of projects in the areas of education, working waterfronts, fisheries management and other issues of importance to these communities.  The Institute has an annual operating budget of $2.5 million and a membership base of nearly 4,800. Its main office  is located in the coastal city of Rockland in midcoast Maine.

Chief Financial Officer

The Island Institute seeks a Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to oversee all of the organization’s accounting and financial transactions and, as a member of the senior management team, work to meet the financials goals and objectives of the Institute by ensuring the timely preparation and flow of financial statements, reports, contracts, documentation, payments and budgetary functions. The CFO creates and implements a financial support system that – through the use of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and an integrated electronic accounting system – enables senior management to focus on providing leadership, operational and financial guidance to the organization while the Finance team handles all routine financial, accounting, bookkeeping and payroll functions. The CFO supervises the members of the Finance team and reports to the President.

Community Development Associate 

For 30 years, the Island Institute has worked to sustain Maine’s island and remote coastal communities.  The Institute seeks a Community Development Associate who will be responsible for providing support for programming related to strengthening diverse community development initiatives.

The Community Development Associate will provide programmatic support for several core community development programs, including the Island Fellows, the Island Sustainability through Leadership and Entrepreneurship (ISLE) program and the Maine Islands Coalition. The associate will serve as a resource for the participants in these programs, and also organize and facilitate meetings and events connected to these programs.

The Community Development Associate will report directly to the Community and Economic Development Director and partner with staff members across the entire Programs team (Energy, Marine Resources, Education).
