Harmful Algal Blooms

Harmful algal blooms have been increasing in frequency and severity over the past 3 decades in coastal waters of the world's oceans. Although human activities are believed to be directly responsible for this trend, the linkage is not understood. Our work has been directed largely towards toxic diatoms, trying to understand the oceanographic conditions favourable for the rapid growth of these diatoms over non-toxic diatom species as well as to identify the factors that trigger the sporadic production of toxin by these cells.
