Ocean Optics

Marine Coloured Dissolved Organic Matter (CDOM) comprises an unknown mixture of recent and partially processed organic constituents that absorb light in the near UV and visible wavelengths of light. These substances both dramatically alter the propagation and spectral characteristics of light in ocean waters, and alters the spectral signature of light emitted from surface waters and measured by remote sensing. The mechanisms and dynamics of CDOM cycling remain key questions in oceanography.
