Vietnamese Student Learns Plenty At The University of Maine
Anh Do, a Business Administration student with a double concentration in Accounting and Finance from Vietnam was interviewed on Voice of America. VOA broadcasts more than 1,000 hours of news, information, educational, and cultural programming every week to an estimated worldwide audience of more than 100 million people. When asked what her plans are after she graduates, she says, “My plan is to eventually go back to Vietnam and then have my own business and do something that helps my own country. Right now Vietnam is a developing country and we are trying to recover from war so I think it will help a lot to have highly educated people in my country and I want to have my own business and have an independent life.”

Student Collects “Dress for Success” Clothing for Community Job-Seekers
A University of Maine student undertook a "Dress for Success" clothing drive this spring as a community service project and an effort to help students from the Penobscot Job Corps Center in Bangor get proper attire for jobs and job interviews.
"The basic idea for this is there are students who are trying very hard to enter the job market and they may not have the resources," says Jessica Richards, a journalism major from Orrington and the community service chair of the UMaine student chapter of the American Marketing Association. s
Classes Compete for a Worthy Cause
The idea was Professor Broderick's. She was distressed to see the Manna box virtually empty at the Atrium. She and Professor Coons decided to hold a contest between two sections of BUA 220, and two sections of BUA 202. They challenged the students to bring canned goods on the Thursday before break, or to contribute one dollar in lieu of a food item. If over 50% of the students donated food or money, class would be let out a half hour early.
All four classes met the challenge.
The BUA 202 students contributed about 80 items. When combined with the BUA 220, as well as other contributions, it is estimated there was 200-250 food items. The students donated canned goods. Baked beans, soups, stews and fruit were the most common items, we well as those staples of the college diet, Ramen Noodles, and boxes of cereal.
“The students were proud of their accomplishment”, says Professor Coons. “It's important for them to realize that a modest individual effort, when combined with the efforts of others, can have a significant effect, and really make a difference”.
