Mission Statement
Dedicated to improving the
quality of public dialogue about state, regional, and national policy
issues.
The Margaret Chase Smith Policy
Center at the University of Maine is dedicated to advancing public
discussion about important policy issues of our day. Our tradition is one of
independent and objective inquiry -- in the spirit of the respected Maine
Senator for whom we are named. Our services include policy analysis across a
broad range of issues, best practices research, program evaluation, training
in leadership and organizational change, and information dissemination and
communication. We work with customers from all sectors and have active
partnerships with Maine business and industry, other universities across the
country, and policy centers throughout New England.
In
Maine, the Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center stands as the
only organization of its kind that is backed by the resources of a
doctorate-granting university. Our location at the flagship campus of
the University of Maine System means we offer immediate access to a
wealth of information resources. Our associates include University of
Maine faculty and other distinguished experts in areas of pressing
concern, including natural resources and the environment, economic and
community development, science and technology, civic life and human
development, education policy and change, and organizational change.
Our reputation as one of the
nation's most respected centers of research depends in large measure on
the quality of our people. The Margaret Chase Smith Policy Center includes several interdisciplinary teams of professionals
known nationally and internationally for their contributions to their
fields. Interdisciplinary teamwork is the hallmark of the Smith Center.
Today's problems and opportunities cut across many traditional fields
and disciplines; realistic solutions and strategic approaches can arise
only from the integration of knowledge.

web site. Learn about our people, our expertise and our contributions to

"In a short period of time,
the Margaret Chase Smith Center has established itself as a national
center of excellence, known for the quality, integrity, and
responsiveness of its work. The Center's ability to integrate expertise
from a range of disciplines to produce practical, timely studies makes
its work useful for executive-level policy-making and legislative and
organizational decision-making."
