Public
Access to Privately Owned Land in Maine
James M. Acheson
Maine’s
"open land" tradition of public access
to private lands is increasingly under threat
from a variety of sources. James Acheson
examines these sources and suggests a more
active course for preserving Maine’s
"open-land" tradition. At stake, he
points out, is the viability of the state’s
outdoor recreation and tourism industries.

Maine's
State Parks: Their Value to Visitors
and
Contribution to the State Economy
Robert Roper, Charles E. Morris,
Thomas Allen, Cynthia Bastey
Visitors
to Maine’s state parks and historic sites
report high levels of satisfaction. As the
authors convey, parks are an important component
of Maine’s tourism industry, generating an
overall
economic impact exceeding $30 million annually.
Nonetheless, many suffer from long-deferred
maintenance and are in immediate need of major
capital improvements.

| My
Creed...
Is
that public service must be more than doing a job efficiently
and honestly. It must be a complete dedication to the
people and to the nation with full recognition that every
human being is entitled to courtesy and consideration, that
constructive criticism is not only to be expected but sought,
that smears are not only to be expected but fought, that honor
is to be earned but not bought.
