Managing Through Shared Values

March, 1993

The myth of the perfect organizational (pyramid) structure does not describe the reality of most organizations. What happens when cogs fall out of the machine? Conditions affecting American society, like globalization of the economy, diversity of workforce and new technologies have forced us to admit there is no "one best way" to do anything. New theoretical models emphasize shared values, not bureaucratical rules, as the parameters for people to manage themselves. Judy Rogers and Steven Ballard discuss the implications of the "new culture" and "roving leadership" in organizations in this report.
