January, 1995

The growing national problem of earnings inequality is evident and affects women in Maine. While labor market opportunities are increasing from a time when the doors of many occupations were closed to them, the majority of women are concentrated in occupations with low wages, few benefits, and high rates of involuntary part-time employment. Unfortunately, gender matters in labor markets, and economic strategies have different effects on men and women. In this report, Stephanie Seguino reveals the findings of her study on gender and labor markets and offers possible solutions to the problem.
