An unmoderated, online discussion around issues of civic engagement in American colleges and universities.  The Forum will be active from January 22 to February 8, and is open to all participants interested in the topic.  The guiding question is: If engagement in higher education is to emerge more broadly as a core value of the University of the 21st century – as centrally important to the civic mission of higher education and to producing and transmitting new knowledge - what strategic directions are needed?  How can scholarly practice help realize the democratic purpose of higher education?  What are the institutional commitments that are needed to fostering a citizen politics among students and among academics?

In 2006 the Carnegie Foundation introduced the first "elective" classification of colleges and universities, focused on community engagement.  Although they intend ultimately to bring the new classification onto the same update schedule as their other classifications, they will be repeating the community engagement classification process in 2008.  The call for participation will be announced on the Foundation web site and will also be broadcast to subscribers to this list.  Institutions currently included in the Community Engagement classification will retain their present classification.  The 2008 process is to accommodate new participants.  More information is available: http://www.carnegiefoundation.org/
