About the Program
The Maine State Government Summer Internship
Program is a full-time, 12-week, paid work experience. The Program
combines work
experience with an educational program designed to provide students
an opportunity to participate in and contribute to Maine State
Government.
In order to compete for the Internship Program, a student
must be
currently enrolled in a Maine college, or be a Maine resident
enrolled elsewhere, and have successfully completed a minimum of
two years of college. Students currently graduating from
undergraduate and graduate programs are also eligible.
The Internship Selection Committee reviews the applications
and makes the final selections. Consideration is given to
participation by both men and women, education of the applicant,
and previous work experience in relation to the internship positions
available with state agencies.
Student
Eligibility
Students who have previously
participated as Interns in this program are not eligible. To
be eligible to participate as an intern, the applicant:
-
Must be a Maine resident
attending a college or university in or out of the State of Maine, or
be a non-Maine resident enrolled in a Maine college or university.
-
Must currently be enrolled
in college and have obtained credit for at least two full years of
college by the first day of their internship.
-
Students graduating in the
spring of 2008 and graduate students are eligible.
Selection
Criteria
Consideration will be given
to:
-
Education and previous
experience of the applicant in relation to the internship positions
available; and
-
Gender, ethnic, and racial
diversity, as well as opportunities for persons of diverse abilities
The Maine State Government
Summer Internship Program encourages applications from women and
individuals of diverse racial, ethnic, and cultural backgrounds.
Salary
All
interns will receive a weekly salary of $340 gross pay, funded by the
state agency. Salary withholdings will include: federal and state taxes
(approx. 25%); 7.65% contribution to Maine State Retirement System
(partially refundable at end of Internship Program); and Medicare cost of
1.45%. Interns are considered temporary, unclassified employees of the
State of
Maine
and are not paid for holidays or other non-work time.
Independence
Day, Friday (July 4) is a state holiday, so interns will not be scheduled
to work; nor will they be eligible for holiday pay. However, you will be
allowed to make up these 8 hours.
Arrangements must be made directly with your supervisor.
The
Program also consists of an educational component, which requires that
interns attend a seminar in Augusta. In addition, the Program
will conclude with a reception at the Blaine House on the last day of the
Internship, at which you will be awarded a Certificate of Completion by
the Governor or his designee. More
details about these events will be forthcoming.
Academic
credit will not be granted under the Maine State Government Summer
Internship Program. Students seeking academic credit must make
arrangements with academic programs at their own college or university.
