Why Journalism?

Student Journalism:

  • Promotes self esteem and literacy

  • Provides students with a chance to learn responsibility, new skills which can later be integrated with classroom studies

  • Encourages students to become leaders in their own schools

  • Provides students the chance to exercise problem solving and leadership skills

  • Gives students the opportunity to refine their interpersonal skills and meet deadlines

  • Exposes students to new points of view while also requiring them to be neutral

  • Exercises critical thinking skills in a real world setting


Resources for Students

Information about current events which affect student journalists can be found at the Student Press Law Center (www.splc.org). Their web site also provides information about laws, Supreme Court decisions, Freedom of Access information and resources for journalists, students and advisers.

The Web site for the Society of Professional Journalists (www.spj.org) contains helpful information about ethics, law and all things journalism.

The Journalism Education Association's Web site (www.jea.org) provides assistance and yearly conferences on an national level which provide information and opportunities for high school journalism. The site also contains information for high school journalists and their advisors about the craft.
