Minutes from MDEC Meetings

 

Minutes from the meeting on January 30, 2006.

In attendance: Martie Kendrick, Tina Cannon, Sandy Doctoroff, Debbie Dunn, Karen McClure-Richard, Deb Rainey, Ruth Southworth

1. The group met at CCIDS in Augusta from 10:00am – 1:00pm.

2. Debbie Dunn provided an overview of where things stand regarding LD 1772 and the opposing legislation being presented, LD 1790. A public hearing will take place on 1/31/06 at 1:00pm with the Education Committee to discuss these issues. Debbie provided the group with some facts about the proposed changes and the pieces that are believed to be missing from the legislation. All agreed that one concern is that of the birth–age 2 population. Sandy agreed to testify on the position of DEC (if possible), to keep the birth-age 2 population in the State IEU regardless of what the decision is regarding 3-5 year olds.

3. Sandy shared that the grant application for the Jane’s Trust Grant is complete. More information to follow as it becomes available.

4. Martie shared that the Early Learning First/ELOA initiative in Portland is up and running. Though it is in its beginning stages, things appear to be going well. Ruth shared a handout and CD that reports on the Waldo County Early Learning First program. Ruth shared the very positive outcomes of the program and offered her Waldo County program to be a resource for the Portland program.

5. Sandy shared a draft letter written by her on behalf of the MDEC group to address appropriate PRAXIS testing and appropriate certification for early childhood special educators in the State of Maine. The group unanimously voted to send the letter with MDEC letterhead and discussed who it will be sent to in addition to the Maine Board of Education. A copy of the letter will go out on the list serve for other members to add their names.

6. Tina Cannon shared a report on the status of the 2nd Annual MDEC Conference. The planning and organization will once again be a graduate project for TOP students. Tina provided “save the date” flyers for members to share with anyone in the field. More information to follow.
