Minutes from MDEC Meetings

Minutes from the meeting on March 20, 2006.

Those in attendance: Ellie Libby, Deb Rainey, Susan McCormick, Sandy Doctoroff, Sue Chevalier, Pam Rand and Martie Kendrick.

Martie review agenda

Deb treasury report: Approximately $700.00 currently in the account, with a $500.00 deposit from MEAEYC, to support the upcoming Maine DEC conference.

Discussion around upcoming Maine DEC Conference:

• Nine students from Martie and Deb’s SEI 515 class will present posters
• Look at t-shirts and certificates of attendance and CEU’s
• 52 people in attendance would be the break-even point
• Talked about registrations bonus points for registration
• MDEC table for membership journal’s and publications: Pam will “man” the table she will bring journals and lap top

DEC campaign around recruitment:

• $5.00 off the cost of membership is not a lot
• The cost has been prohibitive for increasing membership
• Sandy will sit in on that conversation with the national group

Feedback from State Board of Education on Praxis II:

• Sandy sent out letter higher ed comm. After feedback from members in this group.
• Response from Janet Tockman, saying she will share concerns at next meeting around Feb 20.
• Sandy to follow up with email

CDS discussion

• and Alan Cobo Lewis – (we should invite him to talk at an upcoming meeting)
• Sandy reports: As things currently stand (reviewing Alan’s email of March 11)… last Ed committee meeting decided that the 16 sites will remain with their own governing boards. Centralize fiscal and data functions. A study is being conducted to unify job descriptions and pay rates. Individual sites will need to align policies with this. But there is a provision to sunset in Sept 2006 if this doesn’t work. Provision for Kindergarten students will remain.
• Sub committee will look at a variety of issues Recommendations from sub committees by Jan 07 they will have authority to submit suggested legislation. Currently, massive changes to chapter 180 are on hold.
• Motion to ask Alan if we can post his emails to the list serve... seconded and passed. Martie will make this request.

Alliance for Children Care Education and Supporting Services (ACCESS):

• They were struggling… had a retreat to try to energize, but have been inactive for a while.
• Now recommendation to have multi association committee meetings all meet on same day to revive interest and make good use of everyone’s very limited time.
• Opportunity for MDEC to be represented by Sue Chevalier, through LEARNS her CCIDS LEARNS work. Next meeting March 30th to discuss purpose and goals. Sue will attend and report back to group for further discussion. Motioned seconded and passed (for Sue to attend ACCESS)

Suggestion was made to invite Cheryl Peavey to come to our next meeting for low down on task force. Deb Rainey will invite her to come.
