The CompetitionThe Human Powered Submarine Contest is an annually held student competition which is alternatively hosted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the International Submarine Races. The objective of this competition is to enhance the students engineering abilities by having them design, construct and test a submarine. The 2004 competition will be hosted by the San Diego section of ASME.

The Mechanical Engineering Department hopes to enter its submarine in the competition for the first time in Summer 2005.

Past WorkThe University of Maine’s Mechanical Engineering Department has been working for three years on a submarine for this student competition. A total of 16 mechanical engineering students worked on this project. The academic work is equivalent to a total of 10 credit hours (8 design + 2 laboratory testing).
