The Competition

The Human Powered Submarine Contest is an annually held student competition which is alternatively hosted by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and the International Submarine Races.  The objective of this competition is to enhance the students engineering abilities by having them design, construct and test a submarine.  The 2004 competition will be hosted by the San Diego section of ASME.

2003-2004 Teams

Two teams have worked on the development of the submarine.  These design projects dealt with:

	The optimization of the propulsion system
	Submarine ergonomics and safety

The Mechanical Engineering Department hopes to enter its submarine in the competition for the first time in Summer 2005.

Past Work

The University of Maine’s Mechanical Engineering Department has been working for three years on a submarine for this student competition.

A total of 16 mechanical engineering students worked on this project.  The academic work is equivalent to a total of 10 credit hours (8 design + 2 laboratory testing).

Design groups from previous years had:

	Selected hull and fin shapes
	Constructed sandwich composite hull
	Selected drive type (non-propeller)
	Fabricated steering fins
	Built control system
	Estimated vehicle speed
	Estimated submarine buoyancy
