Background

During the 19th and 20th century Vinalhaven was a major producer of granite. To cut and polish the granite large mills were created and the granite was cut and polished like on an assembly line. A mill on Carvers Bay used the tide to run its granite cutters and polishing machines. The granite industry on Vinalhaven is now nonexistent and now the need for cheap electricity is a major concern. Electrical power on the island averages around 30 cents per kilowatt hour. As engineers we are going to design a turbines to harness the power of the tide for electricity as the mill did to cut and polish granite.
