Years of Service on the ME Faculty:
1946 - 1992 with 46 years of service
Professor Dick Hill came to the University of Maine in 1946
after having received a B.S. in mechanical engineering from Syracuse
University. At that time he had four years of industrial experience
in steam and gas turbine design with the General Electric Company.
Dick Hill was a very important part of the Mechanical Engineering
Department for forty-six years and was also Director of the Department
of Industrial Cooperation for the last thirty years of his tenure.
Dick's contributions to the University of Maine are without
parallel. His dedication, abilities, enthusiasm, creativity and
pioneering spirit are unique as he always went far beyond the
requirements of his job. His contributions to all levels of government
including the U. S. Department of Energy, the Governor of the
State of Maine and the Old Town City Water District have been
significant. His education of the people of Maine through numerous
public speaking engagements, fourteen years of weekly radio presentations
on energy matters on five Maine Public Radio Network Stations,
and his more recent weekly three hour hour-long radio call-in
program on energy related matters has resulted in him being our
best- known and most highly respected public servant.
