Ben R. Chapman, M.S., P.E.
M.S. (University of Maine, 1964)
Associate Professor Emeritus
of Mechanical Engineering
Upon graduation from the University of Maine with a Bachelor
of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1952, Professor
Chapman accepted a position as a Project Engineer with the National
Bureau of Standards in Washington, D.C. That was followed by
an appointment as Assistant to the Supervisor for Production
Planning, U. S. Army, Rocky Mountain Arsenal, Denver, Colorado.
In 1956 he accepted an appointment to the faculty of the Mechanical
Engineering Department at the University of Maine, a position
he held for 38 years. In 1963 he completed the requirements for
a Master of Science Degree and then spent a year doing post graduate
work at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
Ben's contributions
to the Department, College and University were significant
during his 38 year tenure. His dedication to the department's
laboratory programs was significant and he played a leading
role in making recommendations for the purchase and use of
modern sophisticated instrumentation and data acquisition systems.
His concern for the students was demonstrated in many ways,
and his many years of service as faculty advisor to the student
branch of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers was
particularly noteworthy.
Ben and his wife Dottie live at
Sebago Lake where they are enjoying their retirement.
