Smart Medical Implants

Abstract

After an introductory description of some current medical implants and their difference with prostheses the seminar will cover descriptions of hip replacement prostheses, coronary artery stents, coronary artery balloon angioplasty, endovascular guide wires, catheters and microcoils for brain aneurysm, fistula and mal-formations, bulking implants to control incontinence, body flow and drainage, cardiovascular and heart assist implants, neuro and endovascular surgery implants, embolic coils, adjustable gastric bands (Lap-Bands) designed to help a patient lose excess body weight by reducing the stomach capacity, electronic medical implants such as cardiac pacemakers, defibrillators for the heart, neurostimulators for the nervous system, including those implanted into the brain for the Parkinson’s disease, drug delivery infusion pumps and cochlear implants to assist hearing, drug-coated stents and intelligent retinal implants, wireless implants using RFIDs, micro-pumps for drug delivery and glaucoma, totally implantable hearts and applications of polymeric artificial muscles to assist a weak and congested heart, smart scleral bands to correct visions errors and much more.
