Mission, Goals and Objectives

University of Maine - Department of Mechanical Engineering

MISSION
The mission of the Department of Mechanical Engineering is to prepare students for the future by providing a quality mechanical engineering education

GOALS
1. To provide high quality education in mechanical engineering at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.
2. To conduct basic and applied research in mechanical engineering and related areas.
3. To provide service to the profession, to the State of Maine, and to the nation.

EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES
1. To prepare students for successful careers and lifelong learning by providing a solid foundation in the principles of mechanical engineering.
2. To train students in the mathematical and computational skills appropriate for engineers to use when solving problems.
3. To develop skills pertinent to the design process - ability to formulate problems and to think creatively. to communicate effectively, to synthesize information, and to work collaboratively.
4. To teach students to use current experimental and data analysis techniques for engineering applications.
5. To implant in our students an understanding of their professional and ethical responsibilities.

EXPECTED EDUCATIONAL OUTCOMES
1. An ability to apply knowledge of mathematics, science and engineering.
2. An ability to design and conduct experiments, and to critically analyze and interpret data.
3. An ability to design a system, component or process to meet desired needs.
4. An ability to function in mufti-disciplinary teams.
5. An ability to identify, formulate and solve engineering problems.
6. An understanding of professional and ethical responsibility.
7. An ability for effective oral and written communication.
8. The broad education necessary to understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global and societal context.
9. A recognition of the need for, and an ability to engage in life-long learning.
10.A knowledge of contemporary issues.
11. An ability to use the techniques, skills and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
