The University of Maine offers numerous state-of-the-art analytical facilities through a wide range of faculty members and laboratories. These facilities support research from atomic scales to global scales, and provide students with access to instrumentation and field sites that cover the spectrum of needs in microbial ecology and environmental microbiology. Some of the relevant facilities and sites include:

A DNA sequencing laboratory
The Electron Microscopy Laboratory

  • SEM/TEM and light microscopy systems
  • A variety of gas and liquid chromatographs and mass selective detectors
  • Atomic absorption spectroscopy
  • UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy
  • Beta and gamma radiation counters
  • Facilities and equipment for nucleic acid manipulation, including PCR and sequencing
  • Routine analytical chemical and microbiological equipment
  • A variety of nearshore and coastal sampling vessels and gear
  • Flowing seawater facilities (temperature controlled)
