About Us

We are a team of seniors at the University of Maine. We are all majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology and the designing and building of an ultra efficient wood fired water heater is our senior design project. Throughout this project we will be updating this site with information and images that will chronicle our progression as we design and build for a competition on Maine Day.                                                                                                                                       -David Wortelboer 11-4-2008

 Wood-Fired Water Heater Project

After some more hard work and research we have revised our initial design and are moving closer to a final concept. We intend to try and utilize as much lost heat as we can by pre-heating our combustion air using waste heat from the flue. Further detail of our design is available in the photo gallery.

After reviewing our bill of materials we found we were almost $800 over the $1000 dollar budget. In order to make up the difference we made a few more design changes including reducing the number of firebricks and the size to then reduce our cost.  Our heat exchanger design was also changed so that it would be easier to manufacture.
