Modern Languages and Classics

About the Department

Welcome to the Department of Modern Languages and Classics. Our mission is to provide quality education in languages, literatures and cultures.

Our goals are to prepare University of Maine students to successfully take their places in the new global century. We offer courses that teach the past - with Latin and Classical Studies, as well as the present with French, German, and Spanish studies that address both the cultural and literary heritages of these languages. We also offer current courses in conversation and composition, film, North American French, as well as other courses applicable to the present.

A quick look at the programs we offer will give you an idea of what we cover. Please do not hesitate to e-mail or call for more detailed information.

Mission Statement and our Assessment Plan

The Department of Modern languages and Classic, in accord with the Land and Sea Grant charter of the University of Maine, views its charge as encompassing three areas: teaching, research, and public service. Our purpose is to provide students with Baccalaureate programs of the highest quality, delivering courses of breadth and depth in the areas of language, literature and related media, and culture/civilization. As such, our central mission is to carry out graduate (Master of Arts), undergraduate (bachelor of Arts), major, and minor programs of study in French, German, Spanish, Latin, Modern Languages, Romance languages, International Affairs and minor and interdisciplinary course concentrations as outlined in the University of Maine catalogue. In addition, we provide the majority of teacher preparation for language teachers in the State of Maine.

In order to achieve the above, we recognize the following components as vital to our mission:

  • We recognize quality teaching as our primary responsibility to the College, the University, and the people of the State of Maine, and have a departmental commitment to excellence in teaching.
  • Professional development and improvement is an essential part of our work, bringing vigor and vitality to our program offerings and our professional well-being.
  • We apply ourselves to on-going scholarly and creative work, recognizing that this undertaking enhances our teaching and provides new knowledge for our disciplines.

We are committed to educational outreach in the form of public and community service, and to regular institutional service as part of our citizenship within the University of Maine.
