Placement Exam / Credit by Exam
The placement exam, for which there is no charge, can be accessed by clicking on the following link: http://webcape.byuhtrsc.org/?acct=maine. Please contact the Department to obtain the user I.D. and password.
All incoming students who plan to continue the language they studied in high school must take the placement exam for that language. “Incoming” refers to first-year and transfer students who have no foreign language study at the college level for which credits are transferred.
Immediately upon completion of the test, the score and level of placement will be sent to you. Students whose score falls within ten points either above or below the cut-off score for a given level should confirm their placement with the faculty member who coordinates the course (elementary or intermediate) for that language.
For a fee, a student may take this test for credit. Please note that no credit will be given at the elementary language level, though credit at the intermediate level will be awarded as follows:
You will be eligible to receive credit for 203 and 204 by skipping the Intermediate courses (203-204) and passing a higher level course(s), for example FRE/GER/SPA 305. with a grade of B- or better. If you take the exam for credit during the summer or within the first two weeks of classes, you will be charged $10 for each semester of credit (SPA 203/204). Once you have taken the online placement test, print out the results and keep them. You will need to bring them to the Department. If you take the exam after the second week of classes, the fee is $125 per course for which credit is awarded.
Please make the check for credit by exam payable to the University of Maine. It may be either mailed or delivered to, Director of College Success Programs, East Annex, Room 118, University of Maine, Orono, ME 04469
Once we have your results, we will proceed to determine your placement and credit.
