2005-2006 ALANA Student Leaders
Student of
color organizations create an atmosphere of support, encouragement
and empowerment for minority students. Organizations plan and
organize programs and events that educate, enhance and celebrate the
traditions, customs and cultural significance of ethnic peoples; in
addition to supporting the university’s commitment to creating a
campus community of respect and appreciation for everyone.

Heritage Alliance Center – Located in the
ALANA Center
The Student
Heritage Alliance Center (SHAC) was founded in 1997 by former Maine
students Ramone Jones, Vesnier Lugo, Bryan “Mike” Long and their
advisor Sean Frazier. The goal of SHAC was to create a space where
ALL students could feel welcomed and appreciated and through a sense
of community, encourage and educate others about the significance
and contributions of everyone.
With the
evolution of the
ALANA Center, founded in 1999 by former students Shontay Delalue, Vesnier Lugo, and Wesley Petteway, SHAC has taken
on more of a leadership role for the cultural student organizations
on campus.
While SHAC operates as the “voice” for all culturally
affiliated organizations by advocating on a student governmental level, the
other organizations, with assistance form SHAC, functions as the
major programming groups (be it social, academic and/or cultural).
