Andrew Nelson
Andrew Nelson received a B.S. in Natural
Resources (currently the EES program) from the University of Maine
in 1997. Doug is currently working at
AMEC Earth & Environmental in
Westford, MA as a Project Manager in the Information Management
group. He has been working at AMEC for ten years in several roles
such as environmental scientist, data manager, IT specialist, and
project manager. AMEC is a global firm headquartered in London, UK
providing high-power and process industries.
Locally, AMEC’s focus can
be segmented into four service areas: human heath and ecological
risk assessment, hazardous waste, environmental management,
compliance and permitting, and GIS services and applications.
According to the worldwide Dow Jones Sustainability Index, AMEC has
been ranked one of the world’s top five companies for
sustainability.
Working at AMEC as a
Project Manager, Andrew’s job is to design and manage environmental
databases and websites containing chemical, geological,
geographical, and document data. To do this, he coordinates with
data validators, chemists, geologists, GIS specialists, and project
managers to display and analyze environmental data. Andrew manages
environmental database and website development projects where tasks
include interacting with clients, leading technical teams, and
managing finances. He has also performed environmental fieldwork
such as delineations of wetlands and collection of biological,
soil, sediment, and water samples. Working for AMEC has
allowed Andrew to travel to Australia, UK, Canada, and throughout
the U.S. on both project and marketing missions.
Andrew credits EES
coursework focusing on developing scientific technical writing
skills as a major area that prepared him for his professional
environmental career. He noted that “those courses taught him to
write in a concise, detailed manner that translates directly to
‘real world’ environmental reports.” Andrew also credits the
direction of Mark Anderson and the EES staff in “providing
constructive guidance and practical support with opening his eyes to
the many avenues within the environmental field.”
