Ecology and Environmental Sciences

Join Amber Carr as she studies field ecology in Peru.

Every year during the spring semester the University of Maine offers a class entitled INT 475: Field Studies in Ecology. Past years the class has gone to locations such as South Africa, Belize, and Honduras. This year we went to Peru. Before we left for the trip there were five class meetings and during the trip we were required to keep a species list and a journal.

In the course we touched upon three major ecosystems in southern Peru. The first was the arid coast south of Lima. The second was mountane habitats located near Cusco. These included Machu Picchu, a cloud forest in Manu, and the Amazon rainforest in Manu. The third ecosystem is the altiplano in the city of Puno on Lake Titicaca.
