The Donnell Pond
reserve is a treasure, East of Ellsworth, Maine. The land is
managed by the Maine Department of Conservation, Bureau of Parks and
Lands.
The Big Chief
trail up Black Mountain is a delightful place for a fall hike.
The trail starts through a classic example of the Acadian Forest
type.
The views from
this trail are spectacular, including views South to Acadia and East
to Tunk Lake.

This is also a great spot to study
some of your glacial geology skills. A great resource for
studying this is the
Maine Ice Age Trail web site.
