Ecology and Environmental Sciences

Field Experience and Study Abroad Options

Students in Ecology and Environmental Sciences (EES) are encouraged to take one or two semesters of study in one of many field-based programs offered in this country. The University also maintains student exchange agreements with a number of foreign universities, many of which have excellent environmental sciences programs.

Universities in England have some particularly good programs in environmental sciences that top EES majors are encouraged to take advantage of. Most recent student exchanges have taken place with Sunderland University, Lancaster University, and East Anglia University.  EES students have also participated in programs such as Semester at Sea, National Outdoor Leadership School, School for Field Studies, and Student Conservation Association.

Erica Bickford, Class of 2006, receives her diploma from NSFA Dean Bruce Wiersma. Erica studied her Junior Year at Lancaster University.

EES majors are also encouraged to pursue field experience and to participate on research with faculty in the program. Research grants and contracts awarded to faculty often result in student job opportunities both during the academic year and in the summer. Students also get field experience (both paid and for academic credit) with organizations and firms outside the University.

Recent field experience activities include monitoring and enforcement internships with the Departments of Environmental Protection in Maine, Massachusetts, and Vermont; interpreter at Denali National Park in Alaska; planning assistant in a small Maine city; and research soil science assistant on a global change research project. Such practical experience complements lessons from the classroom, the laboratory, and field-based learning.
