Great Wass Island

There are many state and federally protected lands in Maine, but private land conservation has a long tradition in the state as well.  The Maine Chapter of the Nature Conservancy is a leader in land conservation in Maine and many of the preserves are open to the public for recreation.  Great Wass Island Preserve, just off Beal's Island in Downeast Maine is a gem of this system, protecting almost 1,600 acres of dramatic coastal real estate.  Two trails take you into the preserve.  This fall day we took the Little Cape Point Trail.
