AFRICA !

Michael writes:

This Monday’s class we saw a presentation by class mate Bill Farthing. He spoke on the people that inhabit southern Africa and how these people came to live here. It was interesting to learn how whites from Europe created Cape Town for ships that were going to the Americas and how they forced natives off of their own land. Eventually the Europeans created reserves for the natives to live on. Bill Glanz also spoke about Nelson Mandela and conservation in South Africa. Previous to this class I knew little about Nelson Mandela, but now feel that he was one of the greatest political figures of the century.

In a week from now, a mere 7days, we will be on a plan bound for Cape Town then on to Johannesburg. Flying to Cape Town is going to be one of the hardest tasks of the trip for me. Being a surfer and knowing that many great surf trips get their start in Cape Town ,the joy of being there will be bitter sweet. From Cape Town we fly to Johannesburg then on to Kruger by bus. I have been checking the weather everyday now. Today in Johannesburg it’s only 73 and sunny. Yesterday it was 77! This will be a slap in the face from the bitter winds of Orono. A slap in the face that can’t come soon enough!
