Winter Waterfowl

The coast of Maine is a great place to see winter ducks and other waterfowl. Many of these birds breed in Canada or even the arctic, but spend their winters along the coast. New Year's Day, 2005, was particularly balmy by Maine standards, so it was a good day to see "winter ducks." A stop along Route 1 at Sullivan Harbor yielded the first sightings of the day, including common goldeneyes, buffleheads, common loons, red-breasted mergansers, and guillemot.

Later at Petit Manan Wildlife Refuge was saw many of the same birds and also black ducks and horned grebes.
