Kathleen Bell – Associate Professor of Economics: “Maine’s lakeside communities are facing a variety of management issues. The variety in that challenges and the struggles being faced by these communities reflects the diversity of the communities themselves. Common problems include preventing invasive plants, maintaining water quality and managing recreation issues. We’re some of the greatest diversity in terms of struggles in Maine’s lakeside community’s merges in issues related to development. Some of Maine’s lakeside communities are wrestling with problems related to overdevelopment and congestion of their lakes. Other communities would desperately like to have more development and visitation. Our research project is trying to better understand the trends in terms of development and recreational use of Maine’s lakes to model these trends and patterns, and to develop support tools to help Maine’s lakeside communities manage their lakes and their communities.”
