Motor Pool

The University of Maine Motor Pool, managed by Facilities Management, maintains more than 45 vehicles, ranging from sedans and minivans, to four-wheel drive pick up trucks and 15 passenger vans. The Motor Pool provides clean, reliable rental vehicles at a competitive price to the University of Maine community. Please contact the Motor Pool at 581-2645 with any questions. Who is eligible to rent a University vehicle from the Motor Pool?
Any University of Maine student employee, student group, faculty and staff member is eligible to rent a vehicle from Motor Pool provided they:

  1. Posses a valid drivers license.
  2. Complete the License Agreement Form authorizing the Motor Pool to perform a background check on their driving record.
  3. Pass the Motor Pool's criteria as per the background check with the State of issue for their driver's license.
  4. Provide their driver's license to Motor Pool so a photocopy can be made of it and maintained on file.
  5. Complete a Vehicle Requisition Form.
  6. Complete the Student Travel Information & Roster Form if they are a student or student organization renting a Motor Pool vehicle that will not have a faculty or staff person accompanying them on their trip.
  7. They have not incurred any violations in conjunction with operating a Motor Pool vehicle.

What types of vehicles are available from the Motor Pool?
The Motor Pool maintains full size sedans and station wagons, two and four-wheel drive pick up trucks, minivans, eight passenger vans, cargo vans, and 15 passenger vans.

How much does it cost to rent a Motor Pool vehicle?

* A rental day is defined as beginning at 7AM and terminating at 7AM on the following day. Any vehicle picked up prior to 7AM or returned after 7AM the following day is subject to an additional day of charges.

What are the rules for operating a Motor Pool vehicle?

  1. Motor Pool vehicles are NOT to be taken home for any reason.
  2. NO smoking in Motor Pool vehicles.
  3. NO pets/animals allowed in Motor Pool vehicles.
  4. Observe all applicable traffic rules and regulations while operating any vehicle.
  5. Be alert at all times while operating any vehicle.

The Motor Pool is located at the Facilities Management Complex on Rangeley Road. See map button on the menu at left for additional location information.

Do I need to take a driving test to rent a Motor Pool vehicle?
A University administered driver's test is not required in order to rent sedans, station wagons, minivans and pick up trucks. A University administered 'van familiarization' is required to rent a 15 passenger van due to the size of the vehicle. The process involves driving the van around campus with a Motor Pool staff person, demonstrating that you can navigate corners and back the vehicle into and out of parking slots.
