Course Description:

The Onward Orientation/Success Class, is designed to examine the significant issues most common to the transitional experience of entering the University of Maine through the Onward Program. With your full cooperation this course will provide you with the foundation for greater success in college and in life. You will have the opportunity to learn many proven strategies for creating greater academic, professional and personal success. Learning objectives for the course are to:

• Master effective study skills – improving skills in notetaking, reading, and test taking.
• Take charge of your life – learning how to take greater personal responsibility, gaining more control over outcomes.
• Improve personal self-management – learning strategies for taking control of your time and energy
• Improve Computer Literacy – improving skills in First Class Email, URSIS, DSIS and Web Research.
• Develop mutually supportive relationships – learning how to develop meaningful relationships with people who will support you to achieve your goals.
• Understanding the Academic Calendar and Academic Actions of the University

Tuesday/Thursday Class Design:

Each Tuesday the class will meet as a full group, in Rm 130 Barrows Hall

Thursday classes you will be broken into smaller Homegroups to work with your Peer Advisors (PAs). Each Thursday will offer you an opportunity to learn more about yourselves, the University of Maine campus, programs, and resources. Each Group will follow the syllabus and meet at the designated location.

Grading Policy:

This course is graded Pass/Fail. To Pass the course students must earn 86 out of 100 possible points from the following grading system. Students earning less than 86 points will earn a Failing grade.

Attendance/participation:

Each full class period attended = 3 points. Points will be reduced for lateness. Excessive tardiness may be counted as absences
