ONS 100 – ONWARD Orientation Class Syllabus - Spring 2008

Course Description:

The Onward Orientation Class (ONO 100) is a continuation of ONO 011 and is required of all first year Onward students. This course is designed to examine the significant issues most common to the transitional experience of entering the University of Maine through the Onward Program. It continues to focus on study skills, career information, and self-awareness. Each student is required to attend two cultural events, one of which may be a sports event. Emphasis in the Spring semester will focus on cultural enrichment, personal awareness and career exploration necessary for completion of a personal mission statement and major/career presentation.

Each participant will complete a written summary and participate in a classroom presentation reflecting the information gained during the Major/Career assignment. (See Handout). Participants will also write and present to the class their own personal Mission Statement.

Grade policy:

This course is graded Pass/Fail. A passing grade will earn the student one degree credit at the University. A total of 100 points are possible. Successful completion of the course will require that the student earn at least 81/100 points.

The point distribution is as follows:

  • Attendance/participation (Each class attended will earn 3 points ) 42 points
  • Homework: Myers Briggs (Keirsey Tempermant Sorter) 10 points
  • Two Cultural Events ( Event #1 = 5 points, Event #2 = 5 points) 10 points

Cultural Events may include, entertainment events, lunchtime lecture series, Art exhibition etc. Only one athletic event can be used. Turn in ticket stubs with your name on the back or a short description of the event and your personal reactions on a separate sheet of paper to the folder located on Ann Smith’s mailbox in East Annex.

  • Major/Career Project Written summary form = 3 points,
College Major presentation =10 points
Career presentation =10 points
Total = 23 points
  • Write and Present Personal Mission Statement 15 points
