Fall Welcome Weekend Overview

The weekend begins on Friday, August 28th.  Click here for information about the Maine Hello to plan your assigned move-in time.  Please read the TENTATIVE schedule below; it lists some of the events planned. Specific times and events might change. You will be given a final detailed schedule with event descriptions and locations when you arrive at the Fall Welcome Weekend Community Fair located in the Collins Center for the Arts. You do not need to pre-register for this event; please just plan on arriving on Friday, August 28th! Arriving by plane or bus and need a ride to campus? FALL WELCOME WEEKEND CHECK IN & COMMUNITY FAIR
8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Collins Center for the Arts
Check out the many on and off campus departments and organizations for free stuff and lots of info!

Maine Hello Residence Hall Move-in - Hearty Maine Hello!
8:00 am - 4:00 pm

All new students living on campus move into your residence hall during this time.  Please match your move-in time with the first letter of your last name:

A-D         8:00 am – 10:00 am
E-L         10:00 am – 12:00 pm
M-P        12:00 pm – 2:00 pm
Q-Z         2:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Campus Tours
8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Collins Center for the Arts
Take a 50-60 minutes walking tour to get orientated around campus. Tours depart every hour on the half hour. Last tour leaves at 2:30 pm.

Meetings for Students Who Missed Summer Orientation
8:00 am – 4:00 pm, Minsky Recital Hall, Class of 1944 Hall
If you were unable to attend Summer Orientation, this meeting will get you caught up and have your questions answered. Meetings start every hour on the hour. Last presentation at 3:00 pm.

Bear Necessities and Athletic Equipment Room Annual Tent Sale
8:00 am – 5:00 pm, Alfond Arena Parking Lot
Featuring sweatshirts as low as $15.00 and t-shirts as low as $5.00 from Bear Necessities. Fleece, shorts and much more! Also featuring game worn and battle tested team uniforms and athletic wear from the Athletic Equipment Room.

Welcome and Open House for New Commuter & Non Traditional Students
9:30 am – 11:30 pm, Commuter Lounge, 228 Memorial Union
Not living on campus this year? Come and meet other new students who are commuting to campus. Share rides, share ideas, make friends! We have great space, good food and wonderful resources for you!

Cutler Health Center Open House
12:00 pm – 1:00 pm, Cutler Health Center
Door prizes, refreshments and tours! Students will also be able to sign up for HealthCare Bucks and Secure Messaging.

Lunch at Hilltop, Wells Central or The Marketplace
11:00 am – 2:00 pm                          
Hilltop will be featuring discounted complete deli lunch for only $5.00. Wells Central and The Marketplace will also be open for ala carte purchases. Students may use their meal plan with their MaineCard and family members may purchase meals with cash or use a guest meal from their student’s meal plan.

Army ROTC Information Session
3:00 - 4:00 pm, Army ROTC Hallway, Memorial Gym
Learn how ROTC will help you gain the confidence and experience of a true leader. There is no commitment for the first two years or try for one of our full scholarships! Come check us out, we just may be exactly what you're looking for. Light refreshments will be served.

Back for his sixth Fall Welcome Weekend here at UMaine this performance will be a sell out. Make sure you come to Reality U at 9pm to assure yourself a seat for this free performance! Steve has worked on ¨The Late Show with David Letterman and with SNL veterans Victoria Jackson and Colin Quinn. Combining impressions, improv, sound effects and classic stand-up comedy, Steve pushes the comedic envelope. A little wacky, a tad zany and a whole lot hilarious, Steve Caouette will leave you in stitches.

Note to Families

Family Members are encouraged to accompany their students to campus to help them settle in to their new home, and participate in some of the events planned for the first day of the Welcome, Friday, August 28th. For meals, students may use their meal plan on their MaineCard (Student ID). Guests or family members may purchase meals with cash or use a guest meal or dining funds from the student’s meal plan. For the rest of the weekend, we have a number of sessions as well as fun events scheduled for students.  Parents/Guests: click here for information on area lodging.

Couldn’t attend Summer Orientation and feel panic setting in? Take a deep breath; we will bring you up to speed! For those students who missed the June orientation sessions, there will be information presentations on Friday, August 28th, 8:00 – 4:00 pm (every hour on the hour, last presentation at 3:00 pm).

Orientation Checklist

Below are some vital things-to-do as a new student that would help in your transition to the University of Maine.  Contact information is provided for each item but should you need further assistance, please don’t hesitate to contact the Office of New Student Programs at (207) 581-1590.

MaineStreet ( http://mainestreet.maine.edu)
MaineStreet is a one-stop online portal where you can view your student status, class schedule, student bill, financial aid, logging work hours if you’re a student employee and much more.  You should regularly check MaineStreet for any important updates. If you have not activated your MaineStreet portal, go to https://mail.maine.edu/um/ActivateAccount using the identification number and activation key included in your acceptance letter.  If you need further assistance activating or accessing MaineStreet, you may call the UMaine IT Help Desk at (207) 581-2506.

Email Accounts
As a UMaine student, you are provided a FirstClass email account.  FirstClass is UMaine’s internal email and conferencing system.  To activate your FirstClass email account and download the client software, go to www.umaine.edu/firstclass using your MaineStreet username and password.  You are also automatically provided a maine.edu email address (this is a separate email address from FirstClass).  You can view your maine.edu email address by logging on to MaineStreet…click on Student Self-Service…click on Student Center…your maine.edu email address is under Personal Information. It is recommended that you forward your maine.edu email to FirstClass by going to http://mail.maine.edu. If you need further assistance activating or accessing your FirstClass or maine.edu email accounts, you may call the UMaine IT Help Desk at (207) 581-2506.

You can check your class schedule by logging on to MaineStreet…..click on Student Self-Service…then click on Student Center.  If your schedule is not yet posted on MaineStreet or if you have any questions about your class schedule, you may contact your appropriate College/Program below:

Housing
If you plan on living on-campus and have not applied for housing yet, please visit www.umaine.edu/housing/ or call (207) 581-4580 as soon as possible. 

MaineCard (Student ID) and Parking Permit
If you haven’t gotten your MaineCard student ID, visit the Student Service Center located on the first floor of the Memorial Union.  Be sure to bring a photo ID such as your driver’s license or State ID.  You can also obtain your parking permit ($50 for the academic year) at the Student Service Center if you plan to commute or bring your car on-campus.  For more information, call the Student Service Center at (207) 581-2273.

Books and Supplies
Students can buy their books, supplies and much more at the University Bookstore located on the first floor of the Memorial Union. For more information, call (207) 581-1700.

Immunizations
To attend classes at the University, it is mandatory that you provide proof of your immunizations. This includes 1 dose of tetanus/diphtheria (TD) within the last 10 years and 2 doses of measles, mumps, rubella (MMR & MMR 2) given after your first birthday.  Submit a copy of your immunization record to Shared Processing Center, P.O. Box 412, Bangor, ME 04402 or fax to (207) 561-3430.  For more information, you may call the Office of Student Records at (207) 581-1299.

Key and Bicycle Registration
Students can register their keys and bicycles with Public Safety so that they can contact you if they are lost and found. Visit the Public Safety building anytime. 

Emergency Warning System
To receive emergency text and email messages (including class cancellation notification), go to www.umaine.edu/umainetxt.

Student Consent Form
Student may choose to have their educational records released to parents, guardians, spouses or others by completing and submitting the Student Consent To Release Information form.  You may download the form at http://studentrecords.umaine.edu. For more information, you may call the Office of Student Records at (207) 581-1290.
