Overview and Registration Information

Congratulations on your decision to come to the University of Maine! We look forward to seeing you at Spring Orientation on Sunday, January 10, 2010. Spring Orientation will be held at the Memorial Union on the Orono campus. Signs will be posted at campus entrances guiding your way to this location. The New Student Orientation staff will assist you and your guests throughout the day as we welcome you to the University of Maine community.

Pre-Orientation Assistance

New Student Orientation staff members are available for individualized Pre-Orientation Assistance from Monday, January 4 until Friday, January 8, 2010, 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. We will show you the campus, assist with the
orientation check list and help you get ready for the semester. To schedule an appointment, please call (207) 581-1561; toll free 1-877-486-2364. Pre-Orientation Assistance appointments start from the Visitor Center, Buchanan Alumni House on campus. For students living on campus, please note that residence halls are closed during this time. Residence Hall Move-in is on Sunday, January 10 starting at 10:00 am.

10:00 a.m. Open Office Hours

Now is the time to buy your books and supplies at the Bookstore, computer needs at the Computer Connection, and get your MaineCard and parking permit at the Student Service Center. See Open Office Hours list below.
 

10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Welcome and Open House for New Commuter and Non Traditional Students
Commuter Lounge, 228 Memorial Union

Not living on campus this semester? Come and meet other new students who are commuting to campus. Share rides, share ideas, make friends! We have great space, good food and wonderful resources for you!
 

10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Campus Tours

Tours depart from the Orientation Help Desk area every hour on the hour. Last tour departs at 3:00 pm.

Meet at the Fogler Library side entrance across from the Memorial Union. Learn about this fantastic resource and great place to study.

Join us for lunch and meet other students from your College/major. You may use your meal plan or dining funds on your MaineCard. Look for tables marked with your College.

4:00 - 8:00 p.m. MaineBound Adventure Center Open

Be sure to check-out the indoor climbing wall in the MaineBound Adventure Center near the Memorial Union.
 

6:00 p.m. Shopping Trip to Bangor
Main Lobby, Memorial Union

Meet at the Orientation Help Desk area. We will be taking students to the Bangor Mall area to pick up any items you might have missed when packing.

Note to Families

Family members are encouraged to accompany students to campus to help them settle in to their new home, and participate in some of the events planned during Spring Orientation on January 10, 2010. Meals may be purchased at the Marketplace in the Memorial Union using cash or the student's guest meal or dining funds on their MaineCard. Click here for information about area lodging.

Orientation Check List

Below are some vital things-to-do as a new student. This check list will help in your transition to the University of Maine. Contact information is provided for each item but should you need further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact the Office of New Student Programs at (207) 581-1590.

Enrollment Deposit
If you haven't done so, please return the confirmation form you received with your acceptance letter with a deposit of $150.00 to the Admissions Office by January 1, 2010. The deposit will be credited to your account in the University Bursar's Office. Once you have submitted your enrollment deposit, the Admissions Office will notify your Dean's Office and administrative departments to assist you with class registration, academic advising, billing, and student support services. MaineStreet
MaineStreet is a one-stop online portal where you can view your student status, class schedule, student bill, financial aid, log work hours if you're a student employee and much more. You should regularly check MaineStreet for any important updates. If you have not activated your MaineStreet portal, go to https://mail.maine.edu/um/ActivateAccount using the identification number and activation key included in your acceptance letter. If you need further assistance activating or accessing MaineStreet, you may call the UMaine IT Help Desk at (207) 581-2506 or email: help.center@umit.maine.edu.

Email Accounts
As a UMaine student, you are provided a FirstClass email account. FirstClass is UMaine's internal email and conferencing system. To activate your FirstClass email account and download the client software, go to www.umaine.edu/firstclass and use your MaineStreet username and password. You are also automatically provided a maine.edu email address (this is a separate email address from FirstClass). You can view your maine.edu email address by logging on to MaineStreet...click on Student Self-Service...click on Student Center... your maine.edu email address is under Personal Information. It is recommended that you forward your maine.edu email to FirstClass by going to http://mail.maine.edu. If you need further assistance activating or accessing your FirstClass or maine.edu email accounts, you may call the UMaine IT Help Desk at (207) 581-2506 or email: help.center@umit.maine.edu.

Housing
Students admitted for the spring 2010 semester can apply online at www.umaine.edu/housing for on-campus housing beginning November 4, 2009. For more information contact Housing Services at housing@umerl.maine.edu.

Immunizations
Maine State Law requires all full and part-time degree-seeking students born after December 31, 1956, submit proof of adequate immunization. Students must submit proof of two (2) doses of immunization against measles (rubeola), mumps, and rubella (MMR) received after (not on) the first birthday after December 31, 1956; and one dose of immunization against tetanus/diphtheria received within the last ten years. Meningitis immunization is not required but is strongly recommended. If you have received a Meningitis vaccine, please forward that documentation so it may be indicated on your record.

Records of immunization are REQUIRED to be signed or stamped from one or more of the following sources:

  • your health care provider (request an official Immunization Report)
  • your high school health records (signed by a school official)
  • your previous college
  • your military base or VA health care provider.

Mail or fax signed or stamped records to: Immunization Records, Shared Processing Center, P.O. Box 412, Bangor, ME 04402-0412, 207-561-3450. Make certain the record includes the student's full name and date of birth. Please direct any questions or concerns to the Office of Student Records, 207-581-1299. Failure to provide required immunization documentation could affect Financial Aid, Enrollment, and other University functions.

Math Placement Test
All students attending UMaine are asked to take the Math Placement Test. Your results will be used by your college to place you in the appropriate course according to your demonstrated mathematical strengths and skills. To take the test you need to set up your WebCT account. To activate your WebCT account, go to http://webct.umaine.edu and log in using your MaineStreet username and password. The Blackboard Learning System will check your Internet browser to ensure it will work with the Blackboard environment. If your browser doesn't pass the checks, instructions are provided on the Browser Check web page. The link for taking the Math Placement Test is displayed under the Course List in the center of the page. Click on the link to start taking the test. If the link to your Math Placement Test does not appear, please try again in 24 hours before calling the IT Help Desk for assistance at (207) 581-2506.

Class Schedule
You can check your class schedule by logging on to MaineStreet...click on Student Self-Service...then click on Student Center. If your schedule is not yet posted on MaineStreet or if you have any questions about class registration, contact the appropriate College/Program:

MaineCard (Student ID)
Students can obtain their MaineCard at the Student Service Center located on the first floor of the Memorial Union. Be sure to bring a Photo ID such as your driver's license or State ID to obtain your MaineCard. For more information contact the Student Service Center at (207) 581-2273.

Parking Permit
Parking Permits can be purchased online at www.umaine.edu/parking. For more information contact the Parking and Transportation Services at (207) 581-4047.

Books and Supplies
The Bookstore is located on the first floor of the Memorial Union. Be sure to visit www.bookstore.umaine.edu for more information about their services.

Emergency Warning System
To receive emergency text and email messages (including class cancellation notification), go to www.umaine.edu/emergency.

Key and Bicycle Registration
Students can register keys and bicycles with Public Safety who can contact you if these lost items are found. Visit the Public Safety building anytime.

Student Consent Form
Students may choose to have their educational records released to parents, guardians, spouses or others by completing and submitting the Student Consent To Release Information form. You may download the form at http://studentrecords.umaine.edu. For more information, you may call the Office of Student Records at (207) 581-1290.
