Activating your UMaine Online Accounts

Now that you have been accepted to the University of Maine, the next step is to make sure your online accounts are activated and working properly.  As an accepted student, two accounts will be very important to you: the MaineStreet portal, and the FirstClass email and conferencing system.  You may have already activated one or both of these accounts as an applicant, or if you previously took courses at one of the University of Maine System schools.  The instructions below will guide you through the process of activating and using your UMaine accounts.

1st: MaineStreet Portal

MaineStreet is your portal to Student Self Service information.  This account must be activated before you can activate and use any of your other UMaine online accounts, hence you should activate this account as soon as possible.  It may take up to 24 hours after activating your MaineStreet account for other accounts, such as FirstClass and the Math Placement Test, to be available.

If you have not already activated your account:

  • Go to: www.maine.edu/activate_account.

  •  Enter your MaineStreet ID Number <<MaineStreetID>>, and activation code <<ActivationCode>>.

  •  Your UMS User ID sp<<UMS UserID>> will be activated by this process.

  • Once you have activated your account, you may use your new UMS User ID and password to check on the status of your application, or to update your personal information.  Go to the MaineStreet portal using the PeopleSoft Quicklink at www.umaine.edu. Enter your UMS User ID and password to access your account.

If you have any questions about your MaineStreet account you can visit our support site at: www.maine.edu/account_info.

2nd: FirstClass

FirstClass is UMaine's official email and conferencing system.  You have recently been assigned a FirstClass e-mail account that you must activate.  The University uses FirstClass to send you important information about financial aid, campus housing, registration, and student services.  It is important for you to activate your FirstClass account once you receive this information.  Please note that it may take up to 24 hours after activating your MaineStreet account for FirstClass to be available.

To activate your FirstClass account

  • Go to www.umaine.edu/firstclass.

  • Enter your MaineStreet ID Number <<MaineStreet ID Number>> and Activation Code <<ActivationCode>> to create your new FirstClass account.

  •  Once you have activated your FirstClass account, you can go to www.umaine.edu/it/software/firstclass to learn more about FirstClass, download client software, or login using your browser to check email.

Taking Your Math Placement Test

Please note that it may take up to 24 hours after activating your MaineStreet account for the Math Placement Test to be available in WebCT

  • Go to webct.umaine.edu

  • Click the Log In button to log in to WebCT

  • Enter your UMS ID sp<<UMS ID>> and password

  • The Blackboard Learning System will check your Internet browser to ensure it will work with the Blackboard environment.  If your browser does not pass the checks, instructions are provided on the Browser Check Web page.  Further assistance is available from the UMaine IT Help Desk at (207) 581-2506.

  • The link for taking the Math Placement Test is displayed under the Course List in the center of the page.  Click on the link to start taking the exam.  If the link to your Math Placement Test does not appear under the Course List, please try again in about 24 hours before calling the IT Help Desk (207) 581-2506 for assistance.
