But what if it snows?

A snowstorm doesn't necessarily mean classes are cancelled, but commuter students need to make the decision about when it is safe to drive to the University. It's a good idea to IDENTIFY YOURSELF as a commuter/non-traditional student to your faculty. CALL (207) 581- SNOW to see if classes are being held.

Commuting doesn't always mean driving!

Many rental properties are available within walking distance of campus. There is also a paved bike path that goes from campus to Old Town. When possible the bike path is even plowed in the winter!

The "Ride Board" on First Class allows carpoolers to connect with each other. To find it just go from your

The BAT Bus is the public transportation system for the Greater Bangor Area, which includes Veazie, Orono, Old Town, Bangor, Brewer, and Hampden. Students can use their Maine Cards to ride The Bus for FREE on all bus routes. Schedules can be found at the info desk, the Commuter lounge or on the Web at www.bangormaine.gov/cs_publictransit.php.

Black Bear Bucks

Black Bear Bucks are optional funds that can be purchased with cash, check, or credit card. You can put funds on your card through the online Maine Card office, the Student Services Center or the automated machine on the 1st floor of the Union. On Campus you can use your Black Bear Bucks at all dining facilities, the University Bookstore, the Maine Bound Adventure Center, to make copies in the library, printing in the clusters, purchase MCA tickets. Take your Black Bear Bucks off-campus with the Black Bear One Program which includes many local restaurants.

Off-Campus Housing Resources

Commuter and Non-Traditional Student Programs in the Commuter Lounge, 228 Memorial Union maintains a comprehensive listing of available off-campus housing. Individuals can view this list on-line (www.umaine.edu/housing) or can contact the office at (207)581.1734 to receive a copy. Students with a UMaine email address can also access other rental listings at isetest.spatial.maine.edu.

  • Be sure you know the ordnances in the town concerning noise, parties, parking and number of unrelated tenants before you rent.

  • Check with your insurance agent about Renters Insurance

The "Roommates and Apartments" folder on First Class has postings of open rentals and also a number of great resources such as tenant rights in Maine and information on specific landlords in the area. To access the folder go to:
