The Visitors' Center

Buchanan Alumni HouseLocated in the Buchanan Alumni House, the Visitors' Center is open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays (all year) and 10:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays (during the academic year only).

The Visitors' Center offers only GENERAL campus walking tours. Individuals desiring information regarding particular academic areas may wish to contact the academic department for specific information and departmental tours.

Campus Tours

Student-guided campus tours are offered six days a week during the academic year, five days a week during the summer months. Tours begin at the Visitors' Center, which is located in the Buchanan Alumni House may include:

To schedule a tour, call the Admissions Office by phone at 1-877-4UM-ADMIT (1-877-486-2364), by fax at 207-581-1213, or by e-mail. When leaving a message, please give your name, address, telephone number, number of people in your party, and the date and time you would like to visit us. If you need to contact the Visitors' Center desk please call 207-581-3740. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and bring appropriate weather gear.

Please let us know if you will need special accommodations as this is a brisk walking tour.

Campus Tour Schedule

  • Academic Year: Monday-Friday, 9:00 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and Saturday, 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
  • Summer Hours: Monday-Friday at 9:00, 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.


Group Tours

Group tours include a tour and an admissions presentation. If you have a large group that would like to visit the campus please contact Liz Downing at edowning@maine.edu or by phone at (207) 581-1558 or by fax at (207) 581-1213. Include the following information with your request:

We need advanced notice to schedule these special tours, so please plan ahead. When you call, please be prepared with the number of students/chaperons that will be on your trip and what times you would like to arrive and leave. We request that school groups have at least one chaperone for every 20 students; some activities require chaperone participation.  Please call for date and time availability.
 

Black Bear Dining

Black Bear Dining is available to the public and we welcome visitors!

We are dedicated to providing a variety of menu choices and options. Groups may pay by cash or make advanced billing arrangements (this option is tax exempt by providing tax exempt verification).

York offers all-you-care-to-eat continuous service from breakfast through dinner.

  • Breakfast - $6.30 (plus tax)

  • Lunch/Brunch - $8.40 (plus tax)

  • Dinner - $10.00 (plus tax)

  • Guest child 12 & under - $4.75 (plus tax)

  • Guest child 4 & under - No charge

Hilltop offers all-you-care-to-eat service at breakfast and dinner (see rates above). Lunch is à la carte – choose from a variety of unique options.

We also offer two à la carte facilities:

  • Wells Central, our newly renovated, state-of-the-art dining complex, features brick oven pizzas, made-to-order sandwiches, a multi-ethnic platform grill, and a bakery/coffee bar.

  • The Maine Marketplace offers seven venues ranging from a grill to multi-ethnic, and home cooking to our famous sandwich venue, MC Fernald.

Our two convenience markets are located at Hilltop and Wells Central.

Interviews and Faculty Appointments

Although not required for admission, meeting with our faculty or admission staff can be an important part of the campus visit. To schedule a personal interview or meeting, call the Office of Admission toll free at 1-877-4UM-ADMIT, fax us at 207-581-1213, or e-mail us. Interviews last approximately one half hour and can be scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. When leaving a message, please give us your name, telephone number, and any specific requests you might have.


Directions to the Visitors' Center

From the South Exit 191 (Formerly Exit 50):

  • Coming from the south on I-95, take Kelley Road Exit #191 (formerly exit #50).
  • Turn right at end of exit ramp. Drive 1 mile to the red flashing light.
  • Take left onto Route 2. Drive 2.5 miles to the third set of traffic lights.
  • Turn left onto College Avenue.
  • Turn right at the University of Maine sign.
  • Take the next right for Visitors' Center

From the South Exit 193 (Formerly Exit 51):

  • Coming from the south on I-95, take Stillwater Ave Exit #193 (formerly exit #51)
  • Turn towards Burger King and the shopping center.
  • Turn right at the fourth traffic light by McDonald's and KFC on College Avenue.
  • Turn left onto Munson Road at the second University of Maine sign.
  • Take the next right for Visitors' Center

From the North Exit 193 (Formerly Exit 51):

Parking Information

Visitors may park at the Buchanan Alumni House, which is where the Visitors' Center is located and where the tours begin and end. Complimentary parking passes will be issued if needed.  Buses may drop off and pick up visitors at the Buchanan Alumni House and should park in the Steam Plant lot if there is room or in the Belgrade lot (please take up no more than two parking spaces). Let us know if you need a campus map or any other information for your bus driver.

Please be aware of road construction on I95 in the Greater Bangor Area during the summer of 2009. This may add considerable time to your travel.
