Orono Student Nurses' Association

Current & Future OSNA Service Projects

  • CPR
  • Ronald McDonald House Dinners
This has been immensely successful and the staff and residents of the house are very grateful for our monthly dinners. Those of us that have participated have had a great time and just seeing the faces of the residents who don't have to worry about one meal while we're there is very rewarding.

  • Mentoring/Tutoring
Though there is a tutoring program available at the University, it is only available for one class per student per semester and is only for 100- and 200-level courses. In addition, many freshmen and sophomores in the Nursing program feel very disconnected from the other nursing students and the nursing program due to the fact that they are not enrolled in NUR courses the first two years. We are working on starting a mentoring/tutoring program that will accomplish a couple of goals. On the mentoring side, we will attempt to pair Junior nursing students with Freshman nursing students and Senior nursing students with Sophomore nursing students. This will not only allow the underclassmen to feel that they have a more direct connection to the nursing program and ask for peer advice when they need it, but it will also allow the upperclassmen to potentially help an underclassman feel less bewildered than they themselves might have felt during their first two years at school. In addition, it may also help us keep more students in the nursing program, continuing on through their junior and senior years to graduate and help alleviate the very well-publicized nursing shortage across the country. On the tutoring side, we will have a Service subcommittee dedicated to running an informal tutoring program for OSNA members only that will help pair upperclassmen with underclassmen to help in courses that the tutoring program either doesn't offer help for (for example, 300-level courses and above), or with additional courses that an OSNA member may need help with (currently, students are only allowed help with one course per semester). For more details on this, please contact us.

  • Nursing Panel
This has been held for the last couple of years and has been very popular. If you have not attended one in the past, three to four nurses are brought in to speak to us about their particular specialty. This helps student nurses see what opportunities are out there that they may never have considered. If you are interested in a particular nursing specialty that you would like some more information on, please let us know so that we may look into bringing that specialty in for next year's panel.
