Emergency Communication System in Place

In light of last spring's tragic events at Virginia Tech, many colleges and universities, including the University of Maine, have been looking at policies and procedures for communicating emergency information. After several months of planning, UMaine has a comprehensive new system in place.

"In our case, President Robert Kennedy instructed us to address the issue in a systematic way," says UMaine Dean of Students Robert Dana. "So we created procedures that will assure effective communications in the event of a serious emergency situation that requires mass notification."

The centerpiece of the new system is a Web-based messaging service called umaine.txt. It comes from e2campus.com, a national company with higher education clients throughout the U.S. Fully integrated into umaine.edu, UMaine's Web site, the umaine.txt system allows UMaine officials to instantly communicate information to students, faculty members and staff members through several means:

  • a text message transmitted to user cell phones

  • e-mail addresses

  • RSS readers (Web feed formats used to publish frequently updated content such as blog entries, news headlines or podcasts)

  • Google, AOL or My Yahoo pages

  • text pagers

  • PDAs

In addition, a new siren is on the roof of UMaine's Class of 1944 Hall, located near the center of campus. If an emergency event occurs, UMaine police officials will sound that alarm, which will serve as a signal to members of the UMaine community to seek information, which will include advice about what people should do to assure their safety and well-being.

Students and employees can register to receive information about emergencies, and/or about class cancellations in case of inclement weather.

In addition, procedures are in place to allow for quick updating of umaine.edu, UMaine's home page, in the case of an emergency situation. A recorded message at (207) 581-INFO will also provide up-to-date information.

Each student and staff or faculty member must register online to receive these messages. Easy-to-follow instructions are available at umaine.edu. Because UMaine's contract with e2campus.com includes a charge for each subscriber, parents and other non-students are asked to refrain from registering.

Dear Parent,

Welcome to the 2007/2008 academic year at the University of Maine and to another edition of our Parent newsletter. The beginning of the fall semester is always an exciting time for everyone on campus. This year is even more special: we've just opened our brand new Recreation Center (you can see photos of this amazing facility on page three) and our program for first year students, called FYRE, for First Year Residential Experience, is off to a successful and memorable start. This fall the FYRE program has 2060 students who are new to campus. Approximately 80% of the class is from Maine. We continue to attract record numbers of transfer students as well: 472 transfer students are on campus this fall.

We hope you can take advantage of the beautiful fall season in this part of Maine and make a visit to campus. We especially hope to see our first year families at our First Year Family Day on September 15. See page 2 for more information.

Our parent e-mail link is also activated at maineparents@umit.maine.edu. You can contact us if you have a question or are having difficulty in reaching the right staff or campus office. We'll try to respond within a day of receiving your note.

We particularly enjoy publishing this newsletter and hope you find the information in it helpful. But we'd love to hear from you. If you have comments or suggestions for future editions let us know.
