Alcohol

Alcohol is the most used drug in the United States. Yes, it is a drug.

What is one drink?
8 oz. glass of beer
1 oz. of hard liquor
4 oz. glass of wine

What is blood alcohol content (BAC)?
A measurement of the amount of alcohol in a person's blood. It varies depending on who's drinking, how much and for how long.

What are the short-term effects of alcohol?
decreased heart rate & blood pressure
dilated blood vessels
impaired coordination, motor skills and judgment
impaired memory
possible blackouts

What are the long-term effects of alcohol?
blocking of the absorption of essential nutrients
alcohol is a depressant, so long-term use contributes to mood and emotional changes
alcoholism
possible death

Fun Things to Do When Being the Designated Driver (DD):
*Play music loud and ask the passengers to sing along.
*Make them pay for gas.
*Play the "Ha-ha" game, where you go around and each person adds another "ha" to the "Ha-ha's"
*Taking pictures (and actually have them come out because you're sober)
*Play padittle or punch buggie (your odds are better at winning)
*Join in on the games (Die, Pong, Flip Cup, etc.) with glasses of water

Maine Operating Under the Influence (OUI) Laws:
If under the age of 21:

If you possess alcohol, you could be fined $100 to $500.

If you transport alcoholic beverages, you could be fined $200 to $500 and lose your license for up to one year.

If you operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol, you will be penalized under Maine's Zero Tolerance Law, which states that with any amount of alcohol in your system and operating a vehicle you will lose your license for one year. If you have a passenger in the car, you will lose your license for an additional 180 days.

If you are over the age of 21:
If you furnish liquor to or provide a space to consume alcohol by a minor (someone under age 21), may be fined $2,000 and/or sentenced up to one year in jail.

If you operate a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and have above a .08 BAC, you will have your license immediately suspended and/or serve time in jail and/or pay monetary fines.
