Eating Disorders

Anorexia Nervosa
has one of the highest death rates of any mental health condition
food restriction and starvation
drive for thinness and excessive loss of weight
excessive exercise
intense fear of weight gain
often accompanied by depression and isolation
denial of problem

Bulimia Nervosa
affects about 2% of adolescent and young adult women
recurrent episodes of binge eating
use of vomiting, laxatives or diet pills to control weight
weight fluctuation
often accompanied by depression


Binge Eating Disorder
1% to 5% of population, affects women slightly more than men
frequent episodes of eating large quantities of food in short periods of time
feeling out of control over eating behavior
of average or slightly heavier weight
often accompanied by depression

How to help a friend
listen with understanding
don't ignore the problem or the person
share your concerns
don't gossip about him/her
don't blame him/her
don't talk about your weight and diet
don't socialize around food. think of other activities
express your continued support
