What is the Peer Education Program all about?
See our Home Page on our Web
site! Just in case you missed it.... we are a group of
undergraduate students who strive to make a difference on campus
by raising awareness about important topics including but not
limited to: sex, STD/Is, HIV/AIDS, GLBT issues, stress, eating
disorders, body image, alcohol and drugs, etc.
How do I get involved with the Peer Education Program?
Towards the end of each
semester we begin our hiring campaign to seek students who will
commit to work with our program beginning the following year. Look
for the mass emails sent on FirstClass, fill out the application,
turn in the application to our office, and wait to set up an
interview. If you want to be put on our mailing list to be sure
you receive the hiring campaign emails and applications, please
email "Peer Question" on FirstClass or call our
581-4561.
Students involved with Peer
Ed take it for course credit (three credits per semester) or Work
Merit. Requirements for students are the same regardless if you
take it for credit or work merit. The only difference is a credit
student receives a grade each semester and the work merit students
receive paychecks.
How much of a time commitment is being involved with the Peer Education Program?
It is about 10 hours each
week. We have a 2.5 hours staff meeting weekly, plus you work
three office hours each week. The remaining five or so hours are
spent presenting and observing workshops, attending trainings,
coordinating and attending events, etc...
What types of events does the Peer Education Program sponsor or co-sponsor?
National Condom Week
promoting safer sex; World AIDS Day; The Know Your Status Campaign,
National Eating Disorder Awareness Week; Coming Out Week and Pride
Week; Rape and Sexual Assault Awareness Month; Alcohol Awareness
Month; The Got Consent Campaign, just to name a few!
What type of people should become Peer Educators?
We seek energetic, outgoing,
fun students who wish to help others by promoting awareness on
campus. We want people who are interested in working independently
as well as working in a group. We like creative people who have
great ideas for new events to sponsor. We look for people who are
interested in learning new information about important but
sometimes awkward subjects. Those involved with our program must
be able and comfortable with presenting to groups of students.
Those involved must be prepared to and willing to take new
perspectives on different issues.
What's in it for me if I become involved with the program? How do I benefit as a Peer Educator?
The benefits are too numerous
to count! Involvement with this program will hopefully teach you
new information that will help you when talking to your friends
and others about important issues that most times people are too
afraid to talk about. It will help you with your presentation and
communication skills. You will learn to be more comfortable and
confident when presenting. You will hopefully learn to take
different points of view and other perspectives on issues. Most
people in the program form lasting and worthwhile friendships with
the other Peer Educators. We collaborate frequently with other
campus organizations, so that will get you more out into the
campus community. Overall, it is a great learning experience that
you definitely want to be a part of!
